Practical Procedures in Skin Cancer – Sydney

GPs play a vital role in the prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancers, with around two thirds of Australians experiencing a non-melanoma skin cancer during their lifetime. GPs also play an important role in co-ordinating the care of more difficult to treat skin cancers, such as melanoma, which is the fourth most diagnosed cancer in Australia (AIHW, 2016).

This workshop will assist you hone your skills in timely detection of suspicious skin lesions, and perform the crucial skill of skin sampling and biopsy. Learn about new treatment options, and expand the services available for your patients in a primary care setting, as well as identifying when to refer for specialist review.

Part one – PRACTICAL PROCEDURES

Category 1 ALM (Part A)
Practise Suturing and Scalpel skills

  • Local anaesthesia, including simple nerve or digital blocks
  • Biopsy techniques – punch and shave biopsies
  • Techniques for surgical excisions – simple ellipses
  • Suturing and knot tying
  • Simple flaps
  • Post-operative care – dealing with complications

Part two – THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Category 1 ALM & Category 2 (Part B)
Beyond Blemishes and Barnacles

  • Management of premalignant lesions
  • Non-melanoma skin cancers
  • Melanoma skin cancers
